Breen logs double-double, Philoxy finishes one assist short of double-double
DURHAM, N.H. – For the second straight game, University of Massachusetts women's basketball never trailed and, helped by four double-digit scorers, came away with a 74-55 victory over New Hampshire at Lundholm Gymnasium on Thursday night. It is the third straight win for the Minutewomen, who are now 4-1 on the season. UNH drops to 1-4.
Sam Breen led the way for Massachusetts with her second double-double of the season, logging game-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Destiney Philoxy nearly matched the feat with 11 points and a career-high-tying nine assists, one short of her first collegiate double-double performance.
Sydney Taylor added 17 points of her own and Maddie Sims rounded out the double-digit performances with 12 points in the win. Breen also handed out four dimes and Taylor recorded three steals.
UNH kept the game within one possession early in the first quarter, only for the Minutewomen to close the period on a 11-3 run thanks to a 4-of-5 shooting line in the final three minutes, 34 seconds. Breen and Sims combined for 26 points in the frontcourt by halftime, posting a 12-of-17 line from the field. The duo, aided in part by Philoxy's five first-half assists, helped send Massachusetts into the break with a 48-26 lead.
Makennah White came off the bench to log eight points and eight rebounds. Angelique Ngalakulondi marked a return to her home state in the fourth quarter, as Ngalakulondi saw nearly five minutes of action and contributed two rebounds plus a block to help close out the victory.
Breen's aggressive play up against the UNH defense drew five Wildcat fouls on the night, three ending in the and-one variety. UMass dominated the glass with a 48-24 team advantage in rebounds.
Massachusetts returns to game action on Sun., Dec. 13 in a 2 p.m. game vs. St. John's at the Mullins Center. Fans can watch the game both on ESPN+ and on NESN.
