Breen And Sims Named Women’s Basketball Team Captains
November 04, 2020 | Women's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. – UMass women's basketball head coach Tory Verdi announced Wednesday that Sam Breen and Maddie Sims have been named team captains for the 2020-21 season.
Breen, a senior forward, was an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team selection in 2019-20 after appearing in 20 games last season. Despite sitting out the Fall semester due to NCAA transfer rules, the Gibsonia, Pa. native averaged a team-high 16.9 points and 9.2 rebounds over 32.7 minutes per night, and her eight double-doubles ranked second in the Atlantic 10. She was also tied for fifth in the league with as many 20-point efforts.
She became the first UMass player since at least 1997-98 to contribute 20-plus points in her first five starts, and shot 43% from the floor including 37% on three-pointers. Breen enters the 2020-21 campaign with two seasons of eligibility remaining after receiving a waiver from the NCAA in the offseason.
Sims, meanwhile, will enter her first season of eligibility for the Minutewomen after sitting out last season after transferring from Siena. In 91 career games with the Saints, the Mount Laurel, N.J. native averaged eight points per game, 5.7 rebounds and a block. In a breakout junior campaign in 2018-19, Sims was an All-MAAC Second Team selection after making her way up the Siena record book and recording seven double-doubles, the latter of which was tied for the league lead. She ranked fourth in the MAAC both in rebounds (7.8 per game) and blocks (1.53 per game), tying the single-game program record for blocks with seven back in January 2019.
