Need to Knows
• University of Massachusetts women's basketball is back on the Mullins Center hardwood as the Minutewomen play host to Atlantic 10 preseason favorite VCU on Wed., Jan. 22. Opening tip is slated for 5 p.m. and the game will be televised on NESN with Jim Cain (PxP) and UMass alum Victoria Stewart (analyst) on the microphone.

• The Minutewomen are looking to bounce back from a tough 69-66 loss at Rhode Island on Sun., Jan. 19 which ended a program-record 11-game winning streak. Three players scored double-figures and a resilient squad erased a Rhode Island lead of 15 in the second half, but the Rams capitalized on a late turnover and pulled away in the final seconds for the victory.

• Junior Sam Breen was just short of her third double-double at Rhody with 26 points and nine rebounds. Both junior Bre Hampton-Bey and sophomore Destiney Philoxy had 11 points apiece. Senior Hailey Leidel's four steals were a game-high and classmate Vashnie Perry had four assists to lead the squad.

• UMass recorded its first 4-0 start in Atlantic 10 play since the 1996-97 season; a feat that last occurred before any current member of the roster was born. A victory on Wednesday would give the squad its first 5-1 start to league action since 1999-2000.

• Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at Boston University on Dec. 11. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,652) needs 27 points to tie former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile (1992-96; 1,679) for No. 3 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80.

• In the St. Bonaventure game on Jan. 8, Leidel eclipsed both the 1,600-point and 600-rebound milestones, becoming one of only three players in program history to accomplish such a feat. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 23 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 40 of her last 41 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.

• Perhaps one of the biggest new additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the interior shot-altering presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly.  With 50 blocks, she needs just two to tie the UMass freshman record–Melissa Gurile had 52 stops in her rookie season of 1992-93.

• UMass heads back on the road for a Sun., Jan. 26 game at George Washington, which tips at noon in Washington, D.C.
