Four different goal scorers pace Massachusetts to first victory of 2019 season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of Massachusetts field hockey had four different goal scorers, including the first collegiate tally for freshman Jess Beech, and the goalkeeping duo of redshirt sophomore Megan Davies and junior Marlise van Tonder held off Yale as the Minutewomen earned a 4-1 victory under the lights at Johnson Field on Friday night. Both sides battled heavy rain during pregame before the showers lightened up in time for the start of the contest at 6:30 p.m.
After the teams traded possessions and penalty corners early, UMass was first to the scoreboard in the 14th minute. Junior Georgie McTear corralled the ball in the attacking third, dribbled into the top of the circle and ripped a beautiful reverse-stick shot that sailed top shelf into the cage for what proved to be the game-winner.
In the second quarter, Beech and junior Lucy Cooper made quick work to triple the lead for the visitors. Beech's tally came in the 21st minute and Cooper followed up just 31 seconds later to send the Minutewomen into halftime with a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Katherine Furry added some insurance of her own in the 36th minute with her first goal of the season, wrapping up the scoring for the night.
Yale ended the shutout bid for the Minutewomen with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, as Imogen Davies put one home for the Bulldogs.
Massachusetts had the overall edge in corners, 6-3, and also put 11 shots on cage to Yale's three on the night. Davies was credited two saves but both her and van Tonder, along with the defense in front of the cage, came up clutch several times to preserve the lead and ultimately secure the win. Davies received the start and was relieved by van Tonder at halftime for her first appearance since joining the program.
The Minutewomen conclude their Ivy League road trip on Sun., Sept. 8 at Dartmouth's Chase Field with start time slated for 1 p.m. in Hanover, New Hampshire.
