Women’s Soccer Nipped By Richmond, 2-1
September 22, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Bonavita scores her fifth of the season for the Minutewomen in the setback.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer opened the scoring just 2:37 into the contest, but Richmond responded with two goals in the second half to edge UMass, 2-1 in the squads' Atlantic 10 opener on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The setback leaves the Minutewomen at 3-3-2 overall (0-1-0 A-10), while the Spiders improve to 4-3-2 (1-0-0 A-10).
"I thought we had a pretty good game plan, but we didn't execute very well," said UMass head coach Jason Dowiak. "After we scored, we got a little comfortable and later in the game they finished their chances and we didn't. We created more than enough chances to level it up, if not go above. It's frustrating. When you get your opportunities you've got to finish them."
UMass was on the board in the third minute when freshman Melissa Kössler played a perfectly-timed through ball ahead to sophomore Lauren Bonavita who drove it home along the ground from just inside the 18-yard box in the third minute.
Shortly after the halftime break, Richmond capitalized on a miscue by the Minutewomen to notch the equalizer. Katie Tritt picked off a pass intended for UMass goalkeeper Peyton Ryan and knocked it into the open net, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute.
The Spiders went on to add the would-be game winner in the 72nd minute when Molly Wierman connected with Brook Beam whose strike from 25 yards out found the top right corner of the UMass goal.
The Minutewomen poured the offensive pressure on Richmond over the final 15 minutes, but Spiders' goalkeeper was there to answer each UMass opportunity and finished the day with seven saves.
UMass out-shot Richmond, 15-7 and led in corner kicks, 3-0. Ryan had two saves in net for the Minutewomen.
UMass will be back in action this Thursday, September 26, when the squad will begin its stretch of three straight on the road, taking on George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia at 7 p.m.
