Women’s Soccer Nipped By Late Goal At Boston College, 2-1
August 22, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Melissa Kössler scores in collegiate debut for the Minutewomen.
NEWTON, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer held its own against ACC foe Boston College, outshooting the Eagles 14-6 and leading in corners, 7-3, but a late goal lifted BC past the Minutewomen, 2-1 on Thursday evening at Newton Campus Soccer Field. The match marked the season opener for both squads.
"For us it was a test," said UMass head coach Jason Dowiak. "If we can play with our very first opponent in 2019, we feel like it sets us up for success throughout the year and I believe that we did that."
Just 4:01 into the contest, Boston College capitalized on its first corner of the contest with Jillian Jennings serving a ball into the box that Samantha Agresti finished at the far post.
UMass controlled much of the possession the rest of the way in the first half and generated several scoring opportunities including a chance for sophomore Lauren Bonavita in the 43rd minute that was grabbed by BC goalkeeper Allie Augur.
The Minutewomen broke through for the equalizer in the 67th minute as freshman Melissa Kössler knocked in a corner kick from classmate Ansley Frazier to bring the score to 1-1.
However, the Eagles responded in the 88th minute with Sam Smith taking a though ball from Olivia Vaughn down the right side before cutting towards the goal and sending a shot far side into the bottom corner of the net.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 25, when the squad will travel to Providence for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Friars.
