Women’s Soccer Earns First Win Of 2019, 1-0 At Providence

Marra provides the tally for the Minutewomen, Ryan earns sixth career shutout with six saves.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer earned its first victory of the 2019 campaign, blanking Providence, 1-0 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Sunday evening. With the win, the Minutewomen level their record at 1-1-0 on the year, while the Friars sit at 1-1-0, as well.
UMass converted on its first opportunity of the contest in the 10th minute. Freshman Ansley Frazier fed a perfectly-timed through ball ahead to junior Kelly Marra who sent a shot along the ground into the far corner of the goal from the top of the six-yard box.
Frazier then nearly made it a 2-0 advantage in the 24th minute, but her attempt was turned away by a leaping Friars' goalkeeper Shelby Hogan and glanced off the crossbar.
Looking for the equalizer, Providence was awarded a penalty in the 78th minute, but Peyton Ryan made a diving stop on Christina Rodgers' attempt that was headed for the inside of the right post.
Ryan finished the night with six saves en route to her sixth career shutout, while Hogan had five stops for the Friars. Providence edged the Minutewomen in shots in the contest, 14-13 and led in corners, 6-4.
UMass will close out its three match road swing to start the year this Thursday, August 29, at UMass Lowell. The meeting with the River Hawks is set for a 6 p.m. start.
