Recap in a Minute
UMass is coming off of the Beanpot Championship on Wed., April 17 in which the Minutemen walked off vs. Harvard at Fenway Park by a 10-9 score, claiming the program's seventh title all-time and first since 2012. The Maroon and White faced a 9-8 deficit heading into the ninth before the rally effort, which was capped by a sacrifice fly from senior Logan Greene that brought freshman Luke Gutos 90 feet home with the winning run.
Six Minutemen had multi-hit performances as the squad erupted for 18 hits to tie a season-high. Three different players scored multiple runs and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto drove in two. Junior Nolan Kessinger also extended his reached base streak to a career-long 18 games.
Spilling the Beans: Beanpot Championship Leftovers
Senior Casey Aubin picked up the win out of the bullpen Wednesday night, picking up the decision for the second straight game that UMass has played at Fenway Park. Aubin previously picked up the victory in relief, then as a sophomore, in the 2017 Consolation Game against Northeastern.
As a team, UMass' 18 hits in the title contest not only tied a season-high but also a Beanpot program record. Senior Ryan Lever's six at bats matched Mike Athas' 2003 mark in the tournament, as did redshirt sophomore Connor Smith's three walks (Nik Campero, 2012).
Nine is Fine
UMass has had every member of its starting lineup, one through nine, record at least one hit on three different occasions this season. Most recently, the Maroon and White accomplished the feat at Fenway Park in the Beanpot Championship vs. Harvard (April 17), while also putting on a hit parade in the Saint Louis rubber game victory (April 7) as well as a win in the UT Rio Grande Valley finale (March 10).
Videtto at First
After a brief two-way stint in the 2018 season, redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto has held down first base as well as the cleanup spot in all 29 games this year. Videtto, a native of Kingston, Massachusetts, checks in with a .317 batting average, second on the team, in part on the strength of eight doubles and 16 RBI.
Shapiro's Streak
Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro had his 26-game streak reaching base safely come to an end in the George Washington finale on Sun., April 14. Prior to that, the UMass left fielder had safely reached in every game to open the season, marking the longest such streak since at least 1996 by a Minuteman in his first year of competition.
Shapiro, currently hitting a team-best .324 with four doubles, a home run and 19 RBI, was tabbed Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week on April 8 after a .667 week that saw the Minutemen go 3-1. That stretch included a series win against Saint Louis that saw the Exeter, New Hampshire native finish a triple short of the cycle in the opener.
Mission Complete
Senior right-hander Justin Lasko has dealt two complete game shutouts this season, currently making Lasko the only arm in the Division I ranks to go the distance multiple times without allowing a run. The Stratford, Connecticut product did so against George Washington (April 12) and at Navy (March 2). He currently sits at 2-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.40, needing to make three more starts on the bump to tie Jared Freni's (2007-10) program record. Lasko already has thrown more innings than any other UMass arm, working 273.1 innings in his career.
Lasko pitched in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League both in 2017 (Chatham) and 2018 (Bourne), being named a league All-Star in his second campaign and also earning the John J. Claffey Award, given to the top Cape League prospect that lives or plays college ball in New England.
Lasko Snags A-10 Weekly Award
For his efforts at Navy on Sat., March 2, Lasko was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight Midshipmen, three short of a career-high and lowering his ERA to 0.61. His outing capped a terrific doubleheader on the part of the UMass pitching staff, as Minuteman arms worked a total of 20 innings without surrendering a run.
On Deck
The Minutemen return to the home confines of Earl Lorden Field for a Wed., April 24 non-conference game against Quinnipiac with first pitch at 3 p.m.
