Recap in a Minute
An upstart UMass squad has won six of its last eight games after taking two of three from George Washington (April 12-14) at Earl Lorden Field. An eight-run seventh inning broke a scoreless tie as the Minutemen claimed the opener by an 8-0 score before the bats came alive to pick up a 10-4 triumph in the middle game. In the finale, GW jumped out to a 4-0 lead before a two-run homer by senior Logan Greene initiated a rally effort that came up just short in a 4-2 setback.
Senior right-hander Justin Lasko was outstanding in the opener, going the distance for his second complete game shutout of the season, during which Lasko allowed only four hits and struck out seven. Greene hit .615 in the three-game set, going 8-for-13 in the three-game set while redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto followed at .500 with each clubbing one home run.
The Shapiro Streak
Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro had his 26-game streak reaching base safely end in the George Washington finale on Sun., April 14. Prior to that, the UMass left fielder had safely reached in every game to open the season, marking the longest such streak since at least 1996 by a Minuteman in his first year of competition.
Shapiro, currently hitting a team-best .320 with four doubles, a home run and 18 RBI, was tabbed Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week on April 8 after a .667 week that saw the Minutemen go 3-1. That stretch included a series win against Saint Louis that saw the Exeter, New Hampshire native finish a triple short of the cycle in the opener.
Nine is Fine
Every player in the Massachusetts starting lineup, one through nine, recorded at least one hit in the Saint Louis rubber game victory on Sun., April 7. Together, the squad churned out 17 runs on 18 hits, both season-highs.
This was the second time this season that the Minutemen accomplished such a feat, also doing so in a win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Sun., March 10.
Videtto at First
After a brief two-way stint in the 2018 season, Videtto has held down first base as well as the cleanup spot in all 27 games this year. Videtto, a native of Kingston, Massachusetts, checks in with a .305 batting average, second on the team, in part on the strength of six doubles and 14 RBI. He went 3-for-3 in the Dayton series finale on March 31 with two walks, two runs scored and one more driven in.
Lasko Tabbed Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week
For his efforts at Navy on Sat., March 2, senior Justin Lasko was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight Midshipmen, three short of a career-high and lowering his ERA to 0.61. His outing capped a terrific doubleheader on the part of the UMass pitching staff, as Minuteman arms worked a total of 20 innings without surrendering a run.
On Deck
UMass has its bye week from Atlantic 10 play this weekend and travels to Maine for a four-game swing from April 19-21.
