Minutemen Power Past GW, 10-4

April 13, 2019 | Baseball

Shapiro, Greene contribute four-hit performances while Smith and Videtto each homer

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball collected its third straight win with a 10-4 triumph over George Washington at Earl Lorden Field Saturday afternoon. Four Minutemen had multi-hit days, including 4-for-5 clips for both senior Logan Greene and redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro, while redshirt sophomores Connor Smith and Anthony Videtto each clubbed home runs in the victory–UMass' sixth in its last seven games.

Videtto wasted no time opening the scoring with his second home run of the season. Shapiro led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and junior Nolan Kessinger worked a walk before Videtto sent a 1-1 pitch over the trees in left field, just inside the foul pole for a three-run shot. After the Colonials answered with two in the second, Shapiro added an RBI single in the last of the fourth to plate senior Alec Norton.

A five-spot in the fifth then put the game away for the Minutemen. Videtto led off the frame with a walk and Greene laced a base hit up the middle before Smith took an 0-1 offering over the fence in right center, his third homer of the season.

Videtto came across with the final UMass run of the afternoon in the seventh when senior Ryan Lever grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Videtto to dart home from third base.

Freshman Jack Steele (2-2) was the winning pitcher, going 6.1 innings in his start, scattering five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. For the Colonials, Brady Renner took the loss (2-3), responsible for four runs on six hits plus two walks.

Shapiro extended his reached base streak to 26 games, stretching the length of the season to date for the Minutemen and Smith's day marked the eighth consecutive contest that he hit safely.

The Minutemen close out out the series on Sun., April 14 with a noon tilt against the Colonials at Earl Lorden Field.
