Dayton Takes Doubleheader From UMass Baseball

March 29, 2019 | Baseball

Series finale scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Massachusetts baseball was defeated by Dayton in both games of a doubleheader on Friday at DP&L Stadium. The sides were originally slated to play a single contest, adding the nightcap in anticipation of inclement weather throughout the weekend. Sunday's series finale has also been moved up to 11 a.m.

Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro had two hits on the afternoon to reach base for the 18th and 19th straight games, matching Tom Conley's 19-game run in 2012 as the longest by a Minuteman to open a season since that year.

Game 1
Dayton 6, Massachusetts 0
The Flyers capitalized on a pair of defensive errors in their half of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Riley Tirotta reached base on a two-out fielding error in the outfield, moving to second on a wild pitch before a second miscue brought Tirotta home.

In the sixth, UD extended its advantage to four on a three-run home run off the bat of Michael Cleary, before a wild pitch and a double pushed across two more in the eighth.

The win on the mound went to Hunter Wolfe (4-3), who dealt seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. In spite of the loss, senior Justin Lasko (1-3) did not allow an earned run over the first 5.2 innings of his six-inning start. Lasko struck out six and walked just one batter, scattering seven hits.

Game 2
Dayton 11, Massachusetts 2
The Minutemen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Dayton answered with a six-run bottom half and would not look back. Freshman Dylan Judd put Massachusetts on the board first, lacing a single up the middle to plate junior Nolan Kessinger, before redshirt junior Thomas Pipolo brought Judd home on a base hit through the left side.

UD pulled away with insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Corey Imbriano (2-0) picked up the win for the Flyers and freshman Kevin Dow (0-3) received the loss. Tyler Henry earned a save in the UD win.
