Kessinger ties career-high with four RBI in victory
DAYTON, Ohio – Junior Nolan Kessinger went 2-for-5, tying a career-high with four RBI as University of Massachusetts baseball claimed the series finale from Dayton, 9-2, on Sunday at DP&L Stadium. Kessinger was joined in the multi-hit club by redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto, who went 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and one more driven in on the day.
Sophomore Sean Harney (1-2) picked up his first win of the season on the mound after a 7.2-inning start, scattering six hits, five strikeouts and two walks. Neither run charged to Harney was earned.
Freshman Jack Steele and senior Casey Aubin took things home from there, dealing the final 1.1 innings and not allowing a hit.
The game remained scoreless into the top of the fourth inning, when a little bit of small ball paid off for the Minutemen. Senior Logan Greene reached on a one-out fielding error, before a bunt single by Videtto and a wild pitch moved Greene to third. Kessinger then grounded out to score Greene and put UMass ahead, 1-0.
UD would even the score at one-apiece in its half of the fifth frame on a double off the bat of Mitchell Garrity. That, however, would set the stage for the Minutemen to post six unanswered runs over the next three innings.
Videtto gave Massachusetts the lead for good in the sixth, capping an eight-pitch at bat with a double to the gap in right center that brought redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro across to score. After the Flyers made a call to the bullpen, a balk plated Greene before Kessinger popped a single through the right side pushed Videtto across and swelled the lead to 4-1.
Junior Eddy Hart slapped his second career triple just before seventh inning stretch, sending a 2-1 pitch to the warning track in right center and scoring Shapiro. Two more RBI singles in the eighth by senior Ryan Lever and redshirt sophomore Connor Smith gave the Minutemen additional insurance and Kessinger wrapped up the day's scoring in the ninth with a two-run knock.
Dayton posted its final tally of the afternoon in the bottom of the eighth on a catcher's interference call with the bases loaded.
For Dayton, R.J. Wagner (2-1) was handed his first loss of 2019, lading 5.1 innings and responsible for four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks. He struck out three in the start.
The Minutemen open the 2019 Baseball Beanpot with a Tues., April 2 Opening Round game at Boston College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Harrington Athletics Village.
