Recap in a Minute
UMass is looking to bounce back from a sweep at VCU this past weekend. Senior Justin Lasko threw seven strong innings on Friday and was responsible for just two earned runs. However, the Minutemen could only scrape two across themselves, and an unearned run in addition to two late scores gave the Rams the 5-2 victory. UMass battled in a series finale pitchers' duel, but VCU broke a 1-1 tie with two late runs in the eighth. The Minutemen had the tying run on second in the ninth but were unable to equalize.
Hey Oh, Shapiro
Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro had an on-base percentage of .429 in the VCU series to extend his reached base streak to all 16 contests this season. This is the longest such streak since at least 1996 by a UMass player beginning their first year of competition and longest overall to begin any season since former Minuteman Mike Geannelis opened up the 2017 campaign reaching in 17 straight. Overall on the season, Shapiro's OBP sits at .431.
Videtto at First
After a brief two-way stint in the 2018 season, redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto has held down first base as well as the cleanup spot in all 16 games this year. Videtto, a native of Kingston, Massachusetts, checks in with a team-high .328 batting average in part on the strength off four doubles and seven RBI.
Nine is Fine
Every player in the Massachusetts lineup, one through nine, contributed at least one hit in the Sun., March 10 win at UT Rio Grande Valley by a 14-11 score. As a team, the Maroon and White tallied a season-best 13 hits with four Minutemen contributing two in senior Logan Greene, junior Nolan Kessinger, redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto. Despite finishing just 1-for-6 on the day, redshirt sophomore Connor Smith sparked the squad early with his first career grand slam, which gave the ball club an early 4-0 lead.
Lasko Tabbed Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week
For his efforts at Navy on Sat., March 2, senior Justin Lasko was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight Midshipmen, three short of a career-high and lowering his ERA to 0.61. His outing capped a terrific doubleheader on the part of the UMass pitching staff, as Minuteman arms worked a total of 20 innings without surrendering a run.
On Deck
Atlantic 10 play resumes for the Maroon and White at Dayton with a three-game series from March 29-31.
