Madden Sets Program-Best Mark In 100 Breaststroke At A-10 Championship

Al Madden clocked in a new program record time of 54.71 in the prelims of the 100 Breaststroke.
GENEVA, Ohio – Al Madden broke the UMass program record in the 100 Breaststroke on his way to finishing fifth on the third day of the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships at the SPIRE Institute on Friday. Madden's record time of 54.71 in the prelims and time of 54.99 in the finals led the way for a trio of top-15 Minuteman finishers.

Luther Gordon posted a time of 55.84 in the prelims of the 100 Breaststroke and a time of 56.07 in the finals to finish 10th while Owen Churchwell broke Tim Gladyshev's (2012) UMass freshman record with a swim of 55.58 in the prelims. Churchwell's freshman record time also ranks seventh-fastest all-time at UMass.

Kyle Stefanides clocked in a time of 49.14 in the prelims of the 100 Backstroke in the morning to set the third-fastest time in program history in the event on his way to qualifying for the finals before finishing eighth. Seamus Trzewik-Quinn added another top-10 time into the record book, setting the seventh-fastest time of 49.58 in the prelims as he finished 12th while Michael Tartakovsky and Kellen Gray finished in 15th and 16th respectively as UMass picked up 19 points in the event.

Casey Ransford finished sixth in the 100 Butterfly, putting together a swim of 48.87 to rank him fifth-fastest all-time at UMass in the event on his way to picking up 13 points for the Minutemen.

Eric Pauls led the way for UMass in the 200 Freestyle on his way to finishing 12th with a finals time of 1:40.28 after posting a time of 1:40.24 in the finals while Panagiotis Androulidakis recorded times of 1:39.82 and 1:42.49 to finish 15th.

The Minuteman divers picked up 21 points on the 3-Meter board, led by Reece Donahue's score of 279.60 in the finals on his way to finishing sixth. Robert Katz posted a score of 254.05 in the finals to finish 11th while Noah Kanner scored 221.75 in the prelims before finishing in 15th.

Ben Gryski opened up the finals session by finishing 16th in the 400 IM after qualifying for the consolation finals with a swim of 4:02.74 earlier in the day.

UMass closed out the evening with a top-five finish in the 400 Medley Relay as Trzewik-Quinn, Madden, Ransford and Ryan Pedrick finished fifth with a time of 3:18.87.

The Minutemen head into the final day of competition at the league championships in sixth-place with a team score of 252 and will open up with championship Saturday with the 200 Backstroke prelims tomorrow at 10 a.m.
