The Pregame Shootaround
University of Massachusetts women's basketball makes its first road trip of the year, visiting sister campus UMass Lowell in a Thurs., Nov. 14 contest from the Tsongas Center. It marks the first time that the Minutewomen have played a regular season game in the building. ESPN3 will stream the game and 91.1 FM WMUA will carry the matchup on the radio.
The Need to Knows
• Both teams are looking for their first win of the young season, with each side entering Thursday night at 0-2. The Minutewomen were in a one-possession game late vs. Providence on Sat., Nov. 9, but the Friars managed to hold off UMass in the final stanza en route to a 72-63 result.
• Sophomore Destiney Philoxy led UMass vs. Providence with 15 points, aided by a 7-for-14 performance from the floor and grabbed five rebounds, while senior Hailey Leidel, freshman Maeve Donnelly and junior Bre Hampton-Bey contributed 11 points apiece. Donnelly hauled in a team-best seven rebounds and Leidel added five assists and four steals on the afternoon.
• The Minutewomen aim to bounce back from a tough 62-59 loss to the River Hawks last year in Amherst. Leidel, then a junior narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards, but UMass Lowell took control in the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run and did not look back in the eventual victory on Dec. 21, 2018.
• Leidel (1,371 points) now holds sole possession of 10th place on the UMass all-time scoring list and needs 34 points to tie Crystal Carroll (1993-97) for ninth with 1,405. She is also one of 17 players in program history with at least 1,000 points plus 500 rebounds.
