Three post double-figure scoring led by Leidel’s 20 points; Donnelly collects five blocks
LOWELL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball grabbed the lead less than two minutes into the game and never looked back as the Minutewomen defeated UMass Lowell, 74-58, at the Tsongas Center on Thursday night. The Maroon and White are 1-2 following the victory, while the River Hawks drop to 0-3 on the season.
Senior Hailey Leidel had a game-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, leading a squad that together was an even 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field. Fellow senior Vashnie Perry put down 14 points and dished out a career-high seven assists, and sophomore Destiney Philoxy contributed 13 points, five dimes and tied a career-best with four steals in the triumph.
Junior Paige McCormick and Perry each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and freshman Maeve Donnelly recorded five blocks, the top mark early in Donnelly's collegiate career.
Massachusetts surrendered the game's opening basket but immediately took charge with a 21-4 run over the next eight minutes. The hot-shooting Minutewomen hit 60 percent in the opening stanza, led by eight points from Leidel and a team-wide effort to convert eight River Hawks turnovers into 13 points.
Donnelly added her final two blocks in a second quarter that saw UMass stretch its lead to 23, taking a 38-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
UMass Lowell worked to claw back with a 16-5 run in the early stages of the second half, but in the final four minutes Perry, Philoxy and freshman Angelique Ngalakulondi turned the momentum back in favor of the Minutewomen for the remainder of the night, highlighted by Philoxy's steal of an inbounds pass before the sophomore went in for a fast break layup.
Massachusetts dominated the paint with a 40-26 spread, also taking the upper hand in points off turnovers (26-9), second chance (17-6) and fast break (18-7).
For the River Hawks, Denise Solis just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Bri Stiers also pulled down nine rebounds.
The Minutewomen return to action on Sun., Nov. 17, hosting Hartford in a 2 p.m. game at the Mullins Center. It will mark Camper Reunion Day; campers who participated in UMass Women's Basketball camps this past summer are invited back to the game and receive a free mini basketball hoops. Fans of all ages are also invited to take part in a postgame shootaround.
