Late Goal Sends Davidson Past Men’s Soccer, 1-0

The Minutemen played 86 scoreless minutes of action before a game-winning Davidson goal late.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team battled Davidson in a scoreless match for the first 86 minutes of action until the Wildcats put home the game-winning goal late in a 1-0 win over the Minutemen on Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium.
Jaylen Thompson scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats in the 86th-minute, scoring from the right side on a shot that hit the left post and went into the back of the net for the only score of the night for a home team that put five of their 10 shots on target.
UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin finished the night with a game-high four saves, including up three in the first half to keep things scoreless heading into the halftime break. The junior kept Davidson off the board in the 24th-minute on a diving save to his left to deny Mateo Alzate of a goal on a bending attempt from outside of the 18-yard box. Dorchin recorded another save in the 44th-minute, coming up with a kick save on a Jamie Diluzio off a Davidson counterattack.
The Minutemen attempted five shots in the first half to finish with eight in the contest, led by a pair of chances from James McPherson in the opening 45 minutes. McPherson ended the night with three cracks at goal as six other Minutemen attempted a shot.
UMass continues Atlantic 10 conference play on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they play host to Fordham at Rudd Field.
