The senior captain converted a penalty in the 94th minute.
AMHERST, Mass. – After Rhode Island managed to tie the score in the final minute of regulation, University of Massachusetts women's soccer responded in overtime with the game winner on a penalty kick, defeating the Rams, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The victory moves the Minutewomen to 6-4-2 overall, 3-2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while URI falls to 3-7-3 on the season and 0-4-1 in conference play.
"It's unfortunate situations we're putting ourselves in still, game in and game out, but man they battled," said UMass head coach Jason Dowiak. "They battled so hard tonight and had the game been 89 minutes and 32 seconds, it would have been a shutout."
After ending the first half deadlocked at 0-0, senior Rebeca Frisk put UMass on the board in the 57th minute. Receiving a perfectly-timed through ball from freshman Melissa Kössler, Frisk slid home her fourth of the season to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 advantage.
Just as it appeared UMass would earn its first shutout of the season, the Rams managed the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Rebecca D'Anna brought down a cross from Jaileen Goncalves and drove it into the bottom right corner of the net at 89:27.
The Minutewomen went on to secure the victory in overtime with senior captain Sini Laaksonen converting a penalty in the 94th minute for her second tally of the year.
UMass finished the contest with a 22-8 shot advantage and led in corners, 8-5. Peyton Ryan logged three saves for the Minutewomen and Teresa Morrissey had eight stops for the Rams.
The homestand continues for UMass next Sunday, Oct. 13, when the Minutewomen will play host to Dayton at 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
