Kössler's Late Strike Forces 1-1 Draw With Dayton
October 13, 2019 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. – Trailing 1-0 with less than five minutes to play in regulation, freshman Melissa Kössler tucked home a loose ball near the goal line to level the match and help the UMass women's soccer team (6-4-3, 3-2-1) force a 1-1 tie with Dayton (5-6-3, 3-1-2) on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field.
"It was an interesting game," said head coach Jason Dowiak. "Both teams had a lot of opportunities to finish. We had plenty of chances today, so it's a little frustrating, but you have games like that. We'll bounce back."
Prior to the match, the Minutewomen honored the seven members of the 2019 senior class during an on field ceremony: Peyton Ryan, Sarah Beaulieu, Rebeca Frisk, Sini Laaksonen, Julia Stojadinovic, Hrefna Petursdottir and Alexandra Schafer.
After playing a scoreless first half, the Flyers struck first as Izzy Greene notched her first goal of the season when she took a ball from Alexis Goins in transition, make a quick move and sent it into the bottom right corner of the goal to give Dayton the 1-0 advantage with 28 minutes left.
The Minutewomen, who outshot the Flyers 17-12 in the match (8-4 shots on goal) continued to press as the half continued. With time ticking down in the second half, Ansley Frazier sent a ball into the box on a corner kick, one of six on the day for the Minutewomen. There, Ansley Melendi got a piece of it near Dayton goalkeeper Emily Jones (seven saves), but Kössler was there to bury her conference leading 11th goal of the season to force extra time.
There, Dayton generated the only two shot attempts in the final 20 minutes, including one off the foot of Landy Mertz with 5:23 to go in the second overtime that Ryan gobbled up, one of three saves on the day for the UMass goalkeeper.
"Peyton played unreal today," Dowiak said. "She had to get out of the box a few times and she made some saves late in overtime."
Massachusetts will be back in action on Thursday when the Minutewomen host Davidson on Rudd Field beginning at 3 p.m.
