Women’s Soccer Falls In OT At GW, 3-2

Laaksonen and Kössler provide goals for the Minutewomen in the setback.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer erased a 1-0 deficit and pulled in front, 2-1, but George Washington managed to tie the score late and claimed a 3-2 overtime victory over the Minutewomen on Thursday afternoon at GW Soccer Field. UMass is now 5-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while the Colonials improve to 8-1-2 and 4-0-0 in conference play.
Hannah Zaluski opened the scoring for GW, redirecting in a cross from Maria Pareja at the net front in the 32nd minute.
Coming out of the intermission, the Minutewomen equalized as senior Sini Laaksonen corralled an Ansley Frazier corner kick and booted it home through traffic at the 51:46 mark.
UMass then pulled in front in the 65th minute when freshman Melissa Kössler won a one-on-one battle for the ball with goalkeeper Tamaki Machi and deposited her 10th of the year into an open net.
With time winding down in regulation, however, the Colonials managed to tie the score at 2-2. Sofia Pavon finished off a feed from Rachel Sorkenn in the 79th minute.
Sorkenn later gave George Washington the victory with her long-range strike for the game winner in overtime that Pavon assisted in the 96th minute.
The Colonials edged UMass in shots, 19-18 and led in corner kicks, 5-4. Peyton Ryan (5-4-2) logged 11 saves in goal for the Minutewomen.
UMass will be back in action this Sunday, Oct. 6, when the squad returns home to Rudd Field to play host to Rhode Island at 3 p.m.
