VCU tops UMass in regular season finale, 2-1
October 27, 2019 | Women's Soccer
The Minutewomen will host an A-10 quarterfinal match at Rudd Field next weekend
RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of VCU goals early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Rams (9-6-3, 3-5-2) outlasted the UMass women's soccer team (9-5-3, 6-3-1) in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at SportsBackers Stadium, 2-1.
Despite the loss, the Minutewomen still secured the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic 10 championship tournament, its highest finish in the conference standings since 2000. UMass, hosting a quarterfinal match for the first time since 2011, will play an opponent to be determined on Rudd Field next weekend. Due to inclement weather, the Davidson and Fordham match was postponed to Monday at 10 a.m. The result of that match will determine the six through eight seeds in the tournament.
After the teams played to a scoreless first half, with VCU peppering goalkeeper Peyton Ryan with 10 shots (three on goal), the Rams continued to challenge the UMass defense early in the second half, converting in the 47th minute when Alyssa Tallent headed home a cross from Susanna Friedrichs.
VCU extended the advantage to two less than seven minutes later as Emma Kershner tucked home a set piece inside the left post to make it 2-0.
The Minutewomen continued to charge, however, outshooting the Rams 10-7 (5-4 shots on goal) in the second half, but couldn't break through until the final minute of the game when Lauren Bonavita found the back of the net for the fourth straight game to close out the scoring.
Bonavita's goal brought her to 10 on the season, good for second on the team behind only Melissa Kössler (11). It marks the first time since the 1998 season that the Minutewomen have two players that reached double-digit goals (Sophie Lecot (15) and Kara Green (13)).
