UMass Advances To A-10 Semifinals With 4-0 Win Over Fordham

November 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer

AMHERST, Mass. – For the first time since 2013, the UMass women's soccer team is back in the Atlantic 10 semifinals. The Minutewomen (10-5-3) scored three times in the first 12 minutes of the second half before adding another late to knock off Fordham (5-11-4) on Sunday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd at Rudd Field, 4-0.

Massachusetts will square off with No. 2 seed George Washington in the conference semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. at Hermann Stadium in Saint Louis following the first semifinal match between No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 4 La Salle. It marks the Minutewomen's 11th appearance in the league semifinals.

"It's the most complete game that we played all year," said head coach Jason Dowiak. "I can't wait to see what the possession stats were because we played a perfect game. We created numerical advances all over the field and it was exactly to our game plan."

UMass was in control of the game from start to finish, dictating the tempo from the outset. The Minutewomen outshot the Rams 21-8 overall (9-1 shots on goal), generated seven corner opportunities while allowing none to Fordham.

Fordham goalkeeper Kelly LaMorte kept the Rams in the match in the first half, making four saves to keep the Minutewomen off the board despite a 10-2 shots advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

UMass wasted no time in striking first out of the break as Lauren Bonavita found the back of the net for the fifth straight game. After Ansley Frazier tapped the ball to Jenny Hipp off a corner, Hipp sent the ball into the box from the right side, where Bonavita played the ball on a bounce and beat LaMorte for her 11th of the season.

Hipp and Frazier connected again less than three minutes later on another corner opportunity, this time finding Ava Jouvenel at the top of the box. Jouvenel then sent a low shot that navigated its way through a slew of bodies and in for her first of the year.

Sini Laaksonen got into the act three minutes after the Jouvenel goal, burying a pass from Hipp into the right side of the net for her third of the year on UMass' third corner conversion of the half.

Senior Rebeca Frisk put the hosts up by four with 6:28 to play in the game when she collected a long pass from Serena Ahmed before going in alone and beating LaMorte for her fifth goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Peyton Ryan took care of business at the other end, making one save to pick up her third clean sheet of the season.
