October 25, 2019 | Field Hockey
Ianni notches game-winning goal just 58 seconds into extra session
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts freshman Bella Ianni scored just 58 seconds into overtime to lift the Minutewomen over La Salle, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The win, UMass' fourth straight, improves the squad to 8-7 on the year and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle drops to 6-10 overall and 3-4 against league foes.
Ianni's game-winning goal came out of a cross-circle feed from junior Georgie McTear with Ianni at the left post to jam the ball home. It went as her fifth goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half, Massachusetts opened the day's scoring in the 43rd minute. Junior Lucy Cooper went 1-on-1 in the circle with Explorers goalkeeper Cassie Kincaid before being stopped on a diving effort. Cooper came up with the rebound and put the ball on cage for freshman Jess Beech to tip the feed at the left post, her fifth goal this season.
The Minutewomen carried that 1-0 lead into the home stretch of regulation, but La Salle capitalized on a circle turnover in the 57th minute and used a quick shot from Amanda Chapin at the top to equalize.
In the cage junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder recorded five saves on the day and Kincaid had eight of her own for the Explorers. With Friday's game in the books, the Massachusetts backfield and goalkeeping has now held opponents to just four goals in its last six games.
Penalty corners came at a premium for both sides, with the Explorers earning four on the day to just two for the Minutewomen. UMass did have the advantage in shots, 10-6.
Massachusetts now breaks from Atlantic 10 play for a Sun., Oct. 27 matchup at in-state rival Boston University. Starting whistle is scheduled for 1 p.m. at New Balance Field in Boston.
