Terriers strike in middle two quarters to take non-conference contest
BOSTON – Boston University's Kiley Gallagher scored twice in a span of just over 11 minutes as University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to the Terriers, 2-0, on Sunday at New Balance Field. UMass, now 8-8 on the season, had a four-game winning streak end with the loss as well as a six-game run on the road dating back to Sept. 6. With the win, BU is now 6-10.
In goal, junior UMass' Marlise van Tonder made five saves and Livy Golini recorded two of her own for the Terriers.
As the contest opened the teams exchanged possessions and played through a scoreless first quarter. With just 54 seconds remaining before halftime, Gallagher put away a reverse-stick shot from the left side for her third goal of the season and giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead. She added an insurance tally in the 41st minute, camping at the far post and burying a right-side pass from Alisa Connolly.
Massachusetts was held without a penalty corner on the day in contrast to six for the Terriers and the home side had the upper hand in shots, 7-2.
The Maroon and White now prepare for a Tues., Oct. 29 game at UMass Lowell that is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wicked Blue Field.
