Barb Weinberg
Barb Weinberg
University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford introduced Barb Weinberg as head field hockey coach on Dec. 15, 2016. Weinberg joined the Minutewomen program as its ninth leader in the 44-year history of the porgram.

Weinberg led the Minutewomen to a stellar 2024 campaign which culminated in the program's first NCAA Final Four appearance since 1992 and fifth overall. Earning the program's 27th overall NCAA Tournament bid and first appearance of her tenure, Weinberg led a staff which received NFHCA Northeast Coaching Staff of The Year selection. Weinberg also earned Atlantic 10 and ECAC Coach of The Year honors after finishing the year with a 17-6 record and an undefeated 7-0 mark in A-10 play. Under her instruction the Minutewomen earned three NFHCA All-American, five NFHCA All-Region and seven All-Atlantic 10 honors including three A-10 major awards.

The Minutewomen continued to build momemtum in Weinberg's seventh season, ending 2023 with a 13-7 overall record and a 5-2 mark in A-10 competition. Hannah de Gast and Myrte van Herwijnen highlighted 11 All-Atlantic 10 honors for the Minutewomen as they claimed Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of The Year respectively. Weinberg helped lead a Massachusetts defensive unit which stood top-25 in the nation in GAA (1.35), top-20 in defensive saves (5) and recorded five shutout victories including the final three games of the regular season. The Minutewomen, who finished as runners-up in the Atlantic 10 Championship also received three NFHCA All-Region Honors.

Massachusetts completed another strong campaign under Weinberg's tutelage in 2022, finishing with a 14-6 overall record and a 6-1 mark in A-10 play. The Minutewomen continued to receive numerous individual honors receiving eight All-Atlantic 10 honors, including Rookie of the Year selection for Mali Herberhold. Under Weinberg's coaching five Minutewomen also earned NFHCA Northeast All-Region recognition including Jess Beech who also received Third Team All-American honors.

The Maroon and White finished a successful Fall 2021 season with an overall record of 13-6, including a 5-2 record in league play, as Weinberg garnered Atlantic 10 Co-Coach of the Year selection. Weinberg became only the fourth head coach in UMass field hockey history to receive the honor. The year saw the Minutewomen defeat three ranked opponents - then-ranked No. 10 Boston College in a 3-2 double overtime victory, the then-ranked No. 11 Saint Joseph’s in a 1-0 overtime win and then-ranked No. 18 UConn in a 2-1 triumph. Massachusetts ranked as high as No. 18 during the season, holding on to rankings from September 9 through November 5.

For their efforts on and off the field, nine A-10 postseason accolades were awarded, which included Weinberg’s Co-Coach of the Year honor and Marlise van Tonder’s A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Massachusetts placed four Minutewomen to the NFHCA Northeast All-Region Team, had 19 members on the NFHCA National Academic Squad, eight lauded NFHCA Scholars of Distinction and collected the 2021 NFHCA National Academic Team award. Georgie McTear also tabbed NFHCA Second Team All-American for the second consecutive year, making it the 61st All-American feat received by a Minutewomen in program history.

In Spring 2021, Massachusetts took to the pitch to compete in a shortened season. The Minutewomen finished 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. UMass ranked No. 19 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll on March 16, 2021, marking the first time since 2017 the program had been placed in the poll.

During the season, Massachusetts saw seven members tab NFHCA Scholars of Distinction, earned the NFHCA National Academic Team honor, while boasting a total of eight A-10 postseason awards. McTear highlighted the group as the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year in the spring season. McTear also received the 60th All-American award in program history after being named to a NFHCA Second Team All-American.

The Minutewomen earned the No. 2 seed in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship on the heels of five straight conference wins to end the regular season. UMass tested itself against one of the strongest non-conference schedules in New England; outside of the Atlantic 10, six opponents were ranked in the top-25. Six Minutewomen collected A-10 postseason awards and junior Georgie McTear was named NFHCA All-Region Second Team.

The Maroon and White boasted one of the most academically talented sides in the country in 2019, placing a program-record 20 student-athletes on the NFHCA National Academic Squad, tied for most in Division I. The team’s Fall 2019 GPA of 3.66 ranked fifth in the nation and 17 Minutewomen made the Dean’s List. Two student-athletes had perfect 4.0 GPAs that semester.

"I am extremely honored to take the lead of the UMass field hockey program," Weinberg said at the time of her hiring. "I have great respect for the rich history coaches and players of years past created and I look forward to building upon this tradition. The desire of the student-athletes to achieve the highest level of success on the field and in the classroom is evident. It is an exciting time to become a member of the UMass Athletics family and I want to thank Ryan Bamford and Darrice Griffin for giving me this opportunity and believing in my vision."

Massachusetts made tremendous on-pitch strides in 2017, Weinberg’s first year at the helm of the Minutewomen. UMass upset No. 16 ranked Boston University and turned in a second place performance in the Atlantic 10 before posting a runner-up finish in the Atlantic 10 Championship. Sarah Hawkshaw and Melanie Kreusch were named NFHCA All-Americans, while Four Minutewomen earned NFHCA Northeast All-Region honors and nine student-athletes earned postseason laurels from the Atlantic 10. Amidst that accolade haul was Kreusch’s second consecutive nod as the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year.

Weinberg served as Wake Forest’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the previous three seasons (2014-16) before she accepted the head coaching position at UMass. The Demon Deacons advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice and won the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference during her tenure. Over her three seasons with the program, Weinberg helped the squad win 38 games.

"I am pleased to appoint Barb Weinberg as the ninth head coach of UMass field hockey," Bamford said upon welcoming Weinberg. "Barb has tremendous credentials as a player and coach, which will positively impact our program moving forward. She is well-prepared to lead her own program given her experience working with some of the most respected coaches in the sport."

Weinberg made assistant coaching stops at American University (2013-14), the University of Maryland (2010-13) and the University of Iowa (2008).

American took home the 2013 Patriot League regular season and tournament championships during Weinberg's campaign with the Eagles. The team totaled six All-Patriot League honorees, five NFHCA All-Region selections and one NFHCA All-America Second Team recipient en route to a 15-6 overall record and 6-0 conference finish.

Prior to her arrival at American University, Weinberg spent three years as a member of the Maryland staff, during which she focused her efforts on the goalkeeper unit. During her time with the Terrapins, the team captured back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2010 and 2011. The team went 23-1 en route to the 2010 National Championship, including undefeated records at home (15-0) and in ACC play (5-0). Maryland followed up with a 19-4 mark in 2011, during which the squad defeated No. 12 Iowa, No. 3 Syracuse, No. 2 Old Dominion and No. 1 North Carolina during NCAA Championship competition.

A 2005 graduate of the University of Iowa, Weinberg was a two-time All-American, three-time All-Big Ten performer and two-year team captain for the Hawkeyes (2000-04). She was also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient in 2004. She started all four of her seasons in the cage for Iowa as the Hawkeyes totaled 46 victories during her tenure.

Weinberg was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team from 2005-10, making 19 international appearances in that span. She also served as the alternate goalkeeper for the U.S. at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
