UMass tops La Salle, secures home field for A-10 quarters
October 24, 2019 | Women's Soccer
The Minutewomen are now 6-1-1 in their last eight matches
AMHERST, Mass. – For the second straight match, and third time in the last five games, the UMass women's soccer team (9-4-3, 6-2-1) fought back from a goal down to turn the tide and secure victory, this time against La Salle (9-7-1, 5-4-0) in the biggest game of the season on Thursday at Rudd Field, 4-2.
The win gives the Minutewomen home field advantage for the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals for the first time since 2011, which will be held at Rudd next weekend against an opponent to be determined.
After the Explorers took a halftime lead thanks to an Isabella Gonsiewski goal on a long-range kick with less than five minutes to go in the opening 45 minutes, Lauren Bonavita found the back of the net for the third straight game to level the match at one just 10 minutes into the second half. After taking a feed from Serena Ahmed, Bonavita rifled a shot from 20 yards out past La Salle goalkeeper Claudia Jenkins (nine saves).
The Explorers, though, struck again just five minutes after the Bonavita tally when Maci Bower beat UMass keeper Peyton Ryan (one save) off a through ball.
But from there it was all Minutewomen, who cashed in three times in the final 28 minutes of play. The equalizer came off the foot of Ahmed, her second of the year, when she took a touch from Jenny Hipp and tucked one under the crossbar to make it 2-2.
It would stay that way until the 86th minute when Nissa Pereira, notched her first of the year, cleaning up a loose ball in the box with an assist going to freshman Ansley Frazier. Frazier would add an insurance marker, her first collegiate strike, with 1:11 to go inside the far post off a cross from Hipp.
The Minutewomen will close out the regular season on Sunday at VCU at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
