Bonavita and Ryan send UMass past Davidson, 1-0
October 17, 2019 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. – After more than 80 minutes of scoreless play, sophomore Lauren Bonavita netted her seventh goal of the year with 8:20 to play in regulation to help lift the Massachusetts women's soccer team (7-4-3, 4-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over Davidson (8-6-2, 3-3-1) on a chilly Thursday afternoon on Rudd Field.
The victory extends the UMass unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) and moves the Minutewomen to 4-1-1 in their last six matches as teams continue to battle for home field in the conference quarterfinals with four regular season games to play.
Peyton Ryan was immense in goal for Massachusetts throughout the match, making five stops to earn her second clean sheet of the year.
After a scoreless yet physical first half that saw Davidson outshoot UMass 7-4 (4-2 shots on goal), the Minutewomen turned up the heat in the final 45 minutes with a 4-1 shots on goal advantage and 3-1 edge in corners to dictate the pace of play for much of the second half.
Massachusetts was finally rewarded in the 82nd minute when freshman Serena Ahmed flew down the right side before sending a ball in to the box. There, fellow rookie Melissa Kössler got a piece of the ball to knock it over to Bonavita, who buried it past Davidson goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch (five saves) for the score.
Kössler's assist on the play was good for her 29th point of the season, the most for a Minutewoman since Moa Mattsson reached 29 in 2012.
UMass heads on the road to continue conference play on Sunday when the Minutewomen take on Duquesne at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
