Frisk Nets Hat Trick As Women's Soccer Posts 8-0 Win Over Chicago State
September 07, 2018 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. - It took 39 minutes for UMass (4-2-0) to score its first goal on Friday afternoon against Chicago State at Rudd Field, but then the Minutewomen's offense exploded for seven more in an 8-0 win over the Cougars. The highlight of the match was a hat trick by Rebeca Frisk, a career-high two goals from Kelly Marra and the first career goal for Ari Comendul.
"We asked the girls to be cleaner in their play; the goals came because they fine-tuned their connecting passes and were a little more energetic in how they attacked today," said head coach Jason Dowiak. "We created a lot of high-quality chances and, once one or two goal in, you see that confidence rise in everyone whenever the play develops."
Frisk's hat trick, her second multi-goal match of the year, was the first for a Minutewoman since Deanna Colarossi scored three against Temple in 2010 (Oct. 22). It was also the most goals for the team in a single match since scoring nine against Albany in 2000.
It also marked the latest in an offensive outburst for the Minutewomen who have scored 15 goals over the last three consecutive wins which have all come by shutout. The last time UMass had such a prolific stretch - way back in 1997 when the Minutewomen scored 16 goals in a similar streak (7-0 vs. Rhode Island, 4-0 vs. Duquesne, 5-0 vs. St. Bonaventure).
Though the Minutewomen carried the bulk of play early in the first half, it was Frisk's conversion at the 39 minute mark that broke the opening deadlock. Just over two minutes later, she notched her second of the game as Mia Carazza (2 assists) played a terrific ball over the top that Frisk was able to carry towards goal.
After leading 2-0 at the intermission, UMass kept the pressure on in the second half. Signe Schioldan put home a deflected Erin Doster shot in the 55th minute before Frisk added her third nearly three minutes later off another deflection. That was followed a minute later by a great individual effort by Lauren Bonavita who stripped the ball from CSU (0-5-1) goalie Judith Sorribes to score on the empty net.
In the 71st minute, Comendul, who made her first career start, knocked home a corner kick service by Schioldan giving UMass a 6-0 lead. Marra closed out the final 10 minutes of play with a goal in the 80th minute and then a blast in the 84th minute.
Overall, five different Minutewomen posted multi-point games: Frisk (7 pts), Marra (4 pts), Schioldan (3 pts), Doster (2 pts), Carazza (2 pts).
In goal, Peyton Ryan earned her fourth win of the season making one save over 61 minutes of work. She shared the shutout with Alyssa Chase who made one save in 29 minutes. Sorribes made six saves for Chicago State in 61 minutes before giving way to Audra Wisehart who made six saves while allowing three goals to close out the match.
The offense piled up 40 shots which was six shy of the program's Division I record of 46 set against St. Bonaventure in 1996. The Minutewomen outshot the Cougars 40-to-3 for the day.
UMass will have just over a week off before returning to action at Rudd Field against Eastern Michigan next Sunday, Sept. 16 (1 PM) to close out the non-conference schedule. The match is free to attend and will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription).
