Four Different Goal Scorers Lead UMass To 5-2 Win Over CCSU

September 15, 2018 | Men's Soccer

The five goals marks just the second time since 2003 that UMass has recorded five or more in a single contest.

AMHERST, Mass.Four different goal scorers highlighted a 5-2 win for the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team over Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (4-2-2 Overall) put home a season-high five goals to tie the mark for the most a team has scored under head coach Fran O'Leary while marking just the second time the feat has been accomplished since 2003.

UMass was on target with all three of its shots in the opening half of play and broke through for their first goal on a converted penalty kick by Jack Fulton. Fulton put home his first of two goals on the afternoon in the 24th-minute after Davis Smith helped the Minutemen secure the penalty kick on a move that forced CCSU into a handball.

DeAndrae Brown scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season under 10 minutes later on a ball played into the box by Yosuke Hanya. With his back turned to goal, Brown got into position to play his first touch down to the ground before putting it into the back of the net to give UMass a 2-0 advantage heading into half.

The Blue Devils cut the UMass lead down to a goal in the 59th minute of play as Louis Beddouri converted on a ball that was mishandled by the Minutemen near goal. Beddouri went on to score another goal in the 88th-minute on a penalty kick that was earned after a UMass handball.

The Minutemen answered quickly to surrendering just their second goal of the season on Rudd Field by scoring two goals within the next three minutes, beginning with another penalty kick conversion by Fulton set up by Hanya, who dribbled past three Blue Devil defenders before getting taken down from behind.

Smith's third goal of his sophomore campaign came under two minutes later to give UMass a 4-1 lead as Clement Benhaddouche sent a ball deep to James McPherson from the Minuteman defensive end before the freshman connected with Smith at the top of the 18-yard box. Jared McCleary's first goal of the season and second of his career game in the 81st-minute after Brown got past a CCSU defender before passing it by the goalkeeper to McCleary who put it into the back of a wide open goal.

UMass is back in action a week from today when they host Dartmouth at home on Sat., Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
