Minutemen Fall In Double Overtime To Dartmouth, 1-0

September 22, 2018 | Men's Soccer

UMass continues its three-game homestand as they wrap up non-conference play against New Hampshire on Tuesday.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell 1-0 to regional foe Dartmouth in a physical contest on Saturday afternoon in Rudd Field. The Minutemen (4-3-2 Overall) came up with key saves at the end of regulation and in the 100th-minute before Dartmouth pushed through with a game-winning goal in the 107th-minute.

The Big Green used the wind to their advantage in the first 45 minutes as earned six corner kicks to go along with nine shot attempts while UMass attempted just one shot in the first on an Eli Cronin header with under a minute to go in the half. In the 17th-mintue, UMass defender Brandon Merklin kept the game scoreless by clearing a ball in front of goal that nearly found the back of the net.

The UMass attack attempted a pair of shots the second half, putting a solid attempt on target as Jack Fulton earned a free kick from about 18-yards out that was saved at the near post by Dartmouth's Henry Stusnick. The Minutemen worked another opportunity, this time from Kevin Boino on a shot that sailed over the crossbar after Yosuke Hanya got by a pair of Dartmouth defenders to find Boino near the top of the 18-yard box.

Marvyn Dorchin finished with five saves in net for the Minutemen, picking up two in each of the 45 minute periods before stopping one in the first overtime period. Dorchin kept Dartmouth from breaking through in the final moments of regulation by saving a shot five yards away from the front of the goal to his right side.

Dartmouth looked to score the game-winning goal in the first minute of the first overtime period before a few moments of discussion by the referees determined that an offside player influenced the attempt. UMass' only shot attempt in the overtime periods came with less than two minutes left in the first OT as Stephen Ravazzoli found DeAndrae Brown downfield with a pass before the forward pushed the shot just wide right on his first touch.

The Big Green broke the scoreless tie and secured the win less than two minutes into the second OT on a Justin Donawa goal.

The Minutemen will wrap up their non-conference schedule on Tuesday as they remain at home on Rudd Field for a 4 p.m. matchup against New Hampshire.
