Minutemen Shutout Hartford In 2-0 Road Win

September 12, 2018 | Men's Soccer

UMass recorded its third shutout in the last four matches on their way to their first road win of the season.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team shutout their third opponent in their last four contests as they picked up their first road win of the season at Hartford, 2-0. The Minutemen (3-2-2 Overall) got a late goal in the first half from Davis Smith before capitalizing once again 15 minutes into the second half on a James McPherson header.

McPherson earned his first career start in the contest, opening up the shooting with a shot on goal in the eighth minute that was saved by Hartford keeper Jimmy Slayton. UMass put five of their 11 shots of the night on target while the goal scorers in Smith and McPherson each forced Hartford into a pair of saves.

Trey Miller made his first of two saves in the 13th minute on one of Hartford's two shots on target in the first 45 minutes, securing a shot from 10 yards out after an attempted UMass clearance kept the ball in their own defensive box.

The UMass offense created a pair of headed chances minutes later as Ryan Saul sent a header that sailed just over the top of the net in the 14th-minute before Smith followed up with a header of his own off a long pass from Dylan Cranmer that was saved by the far post.

Smith eventually broke through for his second goal of his sophomore campaign with less than 30 seconds left in the first half, connecting on a near-post header off a Jack Fulton corner to put the Minutemen up 1-0 heading into the locker room for halftime.

After the Hawks attempted the first shot of the second half more than 11 minutes into play, the UMass attack earned their second goal of the evening as Yosuke Hanya got by the Hartford defenders down the right side to open up space to play a ball into a charging McPherson at the near post for the headed in goal. The goal marked the second for the freshman forward to move him into a tie for first on the team with six points.

Brandon Merklin put a good shot on target in the 82nd-minute for defender's only shot of the night, forcing Slayton into a diving stop off a Fulton free kick from 35-yards out.

The Minutemen return to Rudd Field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against Central Connecticut State.
