Siena Slips Past Women's Soccer 2-1 With Late Goal

August 24, 2018 | Women's Soccer

Minutewomen play strong, but Saints score game-winner with 14 seconds left in regulation.

AMHERST, Mass. - After the UMass women's soccer team carried play for much of the contest, Siena scored a pair of goals in the final 18 minutes of action, including the game-winner with 14 seconds left in regulation, to defeat the Minutewomen 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field.

The game was the first of the weekend for UMass (1-2) which will head to New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is at 2 PM with live stats and streaming video on www.UNHWildcats.com.

"I thought we played some really good soccer in the second half," said head coach Jason Dowiak. "I thought we created some really good chances from a lot of different areas which is promising. It's tough giving up the goal at the end based on the work that the team put in, but we'll learn from this moving forward. Now we need to start rewarding ourselves for the positive response and the work."

In Friday's action, UMass jumped on the board first in the 22nd minute as Kelly Marra scored her first goal of the season. Keeper Peyton Ryan boomed a punt which landed on the Siena side of the field. Erin Doster re-directed the ball ahead to Marra who broke through two defenders to slip a shot past Siena keeper Taylor Dorado. Marra sent a low shot from the top of the 18-yard box towards the far post and past the hands of a diving Dorado.

After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime, the Minutewomen came out of the intermission firing with fives shots in the first eight minutes. Jenny Hipp nearly put UMass up by two when she ripped a shot from 23 yards out that glanced off the crossbar in the 64th minute.

Nine minutes later, Siena equalized when Jayanna Monds fought her way behind the defense to chip a shot past a charging Ryan.

UMass had two chances to go back up, but a shot by Sini Laaksonen in the 87th minute was blocked and a corner kick by Jenny Hipp was off target.

With time winding down in regulation, Siena was able to control a loose ball near midfield and chip ahead down the right flank. Carrie Krohn carried the ball towards the corner flag before sending a cross to the center of the 18-yard box. With 14 seconds left on the clock, Meghan Riccardi cut just inside the top of the 18-yard box to receive the pass and sent a shot inside the far post past a diving effort by Ryan.

Overall, UMass held a 14-to-11 advantage in shots including a 10-to-3 edge in the second half. Each team had three corner kicks in the match. Ryan made five saves for UMass, while Dorado made six.
