Richmond Stuns Women's Lax In A-10 Championship

Spiders win A-10 title, 12-11, in overtime.
RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond scored 35 seconds into overtime to stun the top-seeded UMass women's lacrosse team 12-11 in Sunday afternoon's Atlantic 10 Championship title game at Robins Stadium. The loss ended the Minutewomen's A-10 streak of nine consecutive league titles dating back to the 2009 season.
UMass (14-5) trailed by two going into the final 15 minutes of play but were able to tie the game on a Cassidy Doster goal at the 7:19 mark before Kaitlyn Cerasi tid the game five minutes later. The Minutewomen won the ensuing draw control, but Richmond (16-3) was able to make a save to regain possession. The Spiders earned a free position attempt with eight seconds remaining in regulation, but UMass goalie Lauren Hiller stood tall to force overtime.
In the extra period, Richmond won the opening draw before calling timeout after advancing into its offensive zone. Kim Egizi took the ball on the restart from the far side line on a hard drive to goal where she scored the game-winning goal. Egizi finished the game with four goals and earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
The Minutewomen were led by four goals from Kaitlyn Cerasi who also had three groudnballs and a caused turnover. Holly Turner scored twice while adding three assists to finish her senior season with 93 points which are third most for a single-season in program history. Stephanie Croke scored twice and added two assists jump starting the Minutewomen's offense and defense early. Hiller finished the day with nine saves in goal.
Richmond was led by Egizi's four goals and an assist while Mia Castagnero also had four goals. Megan Gianforte made 14 saves to earn the win.
Overall, UMass held a 32-to-30 edge in shots, but the Spiders won 14-of-25 draws in the game. The Minutewomen overcame a 10-to-5 deficit in the draw circle during the first half by forcing 13 Richmond turnovers.
The Spiders used a three-goal spurt midway through the first half to establish a 6-3 lead and led 8-6 at the intermission. The Minutewomen came out of halftime by scoring three straight with back-to-back goals from Cerasi and a third from Bella O'Connor taking a 9-8 lead at the 18:51 mark.
Richmond responded with three straight goals going up 11-9 with 15:29 to go in regulation before the Minutewomen were able to hold the Spiders at bay while finding the game-tying goals.
The game marked the eighth time the two programs have met in the Atlantic 10 Championship title game.
The NCAA Tournament selection show will air Sunday night at 9:30 PM.
