Kathy Coyner Receives UMass’ Distinguished Achievement Award

Coyner captained UMass in her final two seasons and helped the squad to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1998

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball alumna Kathy Coyner '01 was honored on Friday as recipient of UMass' Distinguished Achivement Award. The award was presented at McGuirk Alumni Stadium at the university's Undergraduate Commencement in front of approximately 5,500 graduates and their families.
 
Coyner, who was a four-year letter winner at UMass from 1997-2001, currently is as an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at UConn Health. Additionally, she has served as head team orthopedic surgeon for the WNBA's Connecticut Sun.
 
She captained the Minutewomen in her final two seasons and helped the squad reach the NCAA Tournament in 1998. In 115 games played including 85 starts, Coyner collected 1,132 points, 515 assists and averaged 32.4 minutes per game. Over the course of her final three seasons with the Maroon and White, she started 84 of the 85 contests she appeared in.
 
Nearly 20 years after her playing career concluded, Coyner's name still dots the UMass top 10 in over 25 statistical categories. In her senior campaign, she became the first Minutewoman to finish a career with 1,000 points and 500 assists.
 
A Belpre, Ohio native, Coyner capped her career with Atlantic 10 All-Academic and CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition as a senior in 2000-01.
