George Mason Takes Pitchers’ Duel From Minutemen, 2-1
April 27, 2018 | Baseball
Zach Mort took a no-hitter into the eighth for George Mason before Andrew Noonan’s RBI single
FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason right-hander Zach Mort went seven innings without allowing a hit as the Patriots outlasted the UMass baseball team, 2-1, on Friday in Atlantic 10 action at Spuhler Field. Mort went the distance and allowed just two hits to secure the victory (5-2).
On the other side, UMass junior Justin Lasko pitched well and dealt his second consecutive complete game effort, although he was the recipient of the tough-luck loss (3-3).
Aside from a walk to Cooper Mrowka in the third inning, Mort did not allow a single baserunner until Justen Voghel was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth. After Brett Evangelista replaced Voghel as a pinch runner, he moved up to second base on an Alec Norton groundout. In a pinch hit situation, Andrew Noonan then broke up the no-hit effort with a single to center field that plated Evangelista.
The Patriots' two runs came via solo homers off the bat of Greg Popatak. In the bottom of the second inning Popatak clubbed a 1-2 offering over the right field fence to give Mason a 1-0 lead. He went yard again in the sixth with what would prove to be the difference in the game.
In the top of the ninth Eddy Hart reached for the Minutemen with two outs, carrying the tying run. But a fly ball to deep left field by Evangelista stranded Hart and brought the game to an end.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 11-20 on the season and 4-12 in the Atlantic 10, while George Mason is now 17-22 and 8-5 against league opponents.
The sides play the middle game of their three-game series on Sat., April 28 at 2 p.m.
