Fry’s Solo Homer Lifts Minutemen Past George Mason, 1-0
April 28, 2018 | Baseball
Harney and Aubin complement Fry with combined shutout performance
FAIRFAX, Va. – Marcus Fry used a solo home run in the fifth to provide all the offense UMass would need as the Minutemen collected a 1-0 victory over George Mason on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field. It was the fifth straight game for the Maroon and White that was decided by one run.
Sean Harney (2-0) received the starting nod and pitched well for the Minutemen, dealing 6.1 innings of shutout ball. He struck out three and allowed five hits, lowering his ERA to 2.79. He exited in the seventh to applause from the UMass faithful in attendance, being relieved by Casey Aubin who pitched the balance of the afternoon and fanned three. As a result, he pocketed his third save.
Collectively, Harney and Aubin held Mason's No. 2 through No. 4 hitters a combined 0-for-12 for the game.
Nolan Kessinger went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot and Logan Greene had an identical 2-for-4 day in the two-hole. Fry turned in a 2-for-3 effort highlighted by what proved to be the game-winning home run, his second of the season.
UMass reached the lead man in each of the first two innings, but both opportunities were thwarted by double plays. After a scoreless first four frames, Fry led off the fifth sending a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence. Later in the inning the Minutemen put runners in scoring position by way of a Kessinger double into the right field corner, but nothing further would come of the threat.
Harney and Aubin did not allow a hit in the final three innings, and, less an error on a bunt in the last of the seventh, kept the Patriots from reaching base. George Mason's Bryce Nightengale took the loss (3-5) on the mound, despite holding UMass to a lone run over eight innings and striking out four Minutemen.
Saturday's win moves the Maroon and White to 12-20 on the season and 5-12 in Atlantic 10 games. Mason is now 17-23 and 8-6 in league play.
Massachusetts will wrap up its time in Virginia on Sun., April 29 as the Minutemen face the Patriots in the 1 p.m. series rubber game.
