Junior goalie takes Co-Player of the Week; freshman attack earns Rookie of the Week
RICHMOND, Va. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse junior goalie Sean Sconone (East Islip, N.Y.) won CAA Co-Player of the Week and freshman attack Chris Connolly (Glastonbury, Conn.) collected his fourth CAA Rookie of the Week Award on Monday, as announced by the league office. Sconone shares the player of the week laurel with Towson faceoff specialist Alex Woodall.
Sconone recorded a single-game personal-best 20 saves during Massachusetts' 11-4 win at Fairfield. He helped the team turn a 3-1 deficit into an 11-3 lead by backstopping 35 minutes of shutout defense spanning the end of the second quarter, the entire third quarter and up through his departure from the game during a timeout with one minute, 45 seconds left in the 4th quarter.
His 20 saves rank tied for 3rd-most in a single NCAA Division I game this season and is four more than the previous best by a CAA goalie this year. It is the first game of 20 or more saves by a UMass goalie since current associate head coach Doc Schneider had 21 at Hobart on April 11, 2009.
On the opposite end of the field, Connolly dished out five assists and caused a turnover in the win over Fairfield. He handed out his five assists to four different Minutemen while his caused turnover directly led to Massachusetts' fourth tally of the day. His five assists are tied for the second-most handed out this season by a CAA student-athlete.
The Maroon and White (9-4 overall, 4-0 CAA) wrap up the regular season with Senior Night against Hofstra (6-6, 2-2) on Garber Field at 5 p.m. on Fri., April 27.
