UMass Baseball Outlasts St. Bonaventure, 5-3

March 30, 2018 | Baseball

Lasko tosses eight innings of one-run ball for win, striking out four

AMHERST, Mass. Justin Lasko (2-1) fanned four batters and allowed seven hits but was responsible for only a single run as University of Massachusetts baseball defeated St. Bonaventure, 5-3, on Friday in UMass' home opener at Earl Lorden Field.

Cooper Mrowka and Logan Greene both went 2-for-4 and scored a run and Ryan Lever went 1-for-3, scored once and drove in two runs. With a double, Lever was one of eight Minutemen to break into the hit column and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games.

UMass opened the scoring for the day in the bottom of the second inning. After Greene reached on a two-out fielding error, Keith Linnane dropped a blooper into left center field on a payoff pitch, scoring Marcus Fry from second base. In the Bonnies' next at bat the squad evened the score at one-apiece when Mike Magnanti's right field single allowed Sam Fuller to come home.

The Minutemen would claim the lead for good in the bottom half of the third, later tacking on one run apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. In the third Mrowka sent a base hit up the middle to score Lever after the latter hit a leadoff double. UMass would subsequently have the opportunity to add insurance, but left men in scoring position.

In the last of the fourth the Maroon and White used small ball to double their lead to 3-1. Greene singled to begin the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Linnane. After moving to third on an infield single by Eddy Hart, Lever laid down a nicely executed safety squeeze and knocked in Greene.

Lever used a sac fly in the sixth inning to plate Justen Voghel, then Voghel returned the favor in the bottom of the seventh with a single that scored Mrowka and move the Massachusetts advantage to 5-1.

The Bonnies would make a valiant rally effort in the ninth inning but would get no closer than within two runs. David Vaccaro's one out double put Casey Vincent at third base and four pitches later, Jeff Palczewski smacked a double of his own down the left field line to clear the bases, cutting the UMass lead to 5-3. Casey Aubin then entered from the bullpen and retired both batters he faced, logging his second save.

Brandon Schlimm (0-4) received the loss for SBU, going 5.1 innings and being charged with four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks, striking out five. At the plate, Vincent, Vaccaro and Palczewski each went 2-for-4.

Originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch, the game was pushed back 15 minutes after rain passed through the Amherst area throughout Friday morning and into the early afternoon.

The win puts the Minutemen at 9-6 on the season and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 contests, while the Bonnies drop to 4-13 and 0-4 in the A-10.

Massachusetts and St. Bonaventure meet again on Sat., March 31 in the middle game of the sides' three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
