Baseball Falls to St. Bonaventure, 6-5, in 12 Innings
March 31, 2018 | Baseball
Eddy Hart and Marcus Fry each had two hits as seven different Minutemen combined for nine hits on the day. Greene finished with four RBIs, a single-game high for the junior. Cooper Mrowka worked four walks and Ryan Lever reached base safely for the 15th consecutive game.
Greene's first career dinger followed a leadoff single by Mrowka and came after Connor Smith and Justen Voghel each reached on a fielder's choice. Dylan Robinson entered to pinch run for Voghel as Fry slapped a base hit to right field. Greene then sent Donovan Moffat's 1-1 offering over the left field wall and into the protective netting surrounding the Earl Lorden Field scoreboard.
Both teams put men on base in the 10th and 11th innings before Palczewski's base knock in the 12th plated Brandon Henshaw for the game-winning run. In the 10th, UMass left runners on first and second before stranding one to end the game.
St. Bonaventure posted two runs in the first inning. After a fielding error put leadoff man Sam Fuller on base, Mike Magnanti reached on a bunt single before the pair would later score as a result of a miscue in the field. In the second frame, the Bonnies stretched the lead to 3-0 when Fuller successfully stole second before a throwing error allowed him to score on a close play at the plate.
The Minutemen immediately responded as Connor Smith launched his first career home run to begin the bottom of the second. A groundout by Greene would later bring Voghel in from third and cut the deficit back to 3-2 heading to the third.
SBU would move its advantage back to three in the following stanza. David Vaccaro's base hit allowed Palczewski to score from second base and Tyler Kelder's left field double plated Vaccaro from second.
From then until Greene's heroics, the score remained 5-2 in favor of the Bonnies. Not to be overlooked in that stretch was an outstanding effort on the mound by Sean Harney. Entering with two outs in the fourth, Harney allowed just one hit before the ninth inning and struck out six while surrendering only one walk. He remained in the game until Carter Knapek took over to start the 11th.
On the bump, Murphy O'Brien (1-0) earned the victory for the Bonnies, tossing three shutout innings of two-hit baseball, walking one and striking out two. Knapek (1-1) received the loss after finishing the game's final two innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the mix.
The teams will meet at noon on Sun., April 1 for the series rubber game at Earl Lorden Field.
