UNH Skates Past UMass Hockey, 3-1

February 03, 2018 | Hockey

Freshman Mitchell Chaffee scored the lone goal for the Minutemen in the setback, his team-leading 11th of the year.

DURHAM, N.H. – Unable to overcome a 2-0 first period deficit, University of Massachusetts hockey dropped a 3-1 decision at New Hampshire on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 11-16-1 overall, 5-12-1 in Hockey East, while the Wildcats move to 10-13-5 and 5-9-4 in league play.

"My team played a good game last night, an emotional kind of game, and I was concerned about how we were going to come out tonight and my concerns were justified," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "UNH came out playing hard and competed really hard for the first 5-10 minutes of the game and put us on our heels. We took some penalties and they scored the early goal. The second goal was a big breakdown by us. Obviously, the second period we decided to play hockey and the third period wasn't bad either, but we dug a big hole for ourselves."

UNH opened the scoring just 2:35 into the contest. Liam Blackburn cleaned up a rebound off a Richard Boyd shot from the point on the power play.

Then, in the closing minutes of the first, the Wildcats pushed the margin to 2-0. Max Gildon found Kohei Sato at the back door, streaking towards the net for the tally at 17:43.

Controlling much of the play in the second period, UMass halved its deficit at the 12:46 mark. Freshman Cale Makar fed classmate Oliver Chau below the goal line and Chau found freshman Mitchell Chaffee at the post to complete the play and put the Minutemen on the board. The tally marked Chaffee's team-leading 11th goal of the season, matching the most by a UMass freshman since the 2013-14 season.

UNH capitalized on a five-minute power play late in the third and regained its two-goal cushion when Marcus Vela knocked in a rebound from Max Gildon at 10:59.

Chaffee appeared to have netted his second of the night with the extra attacker on with 1:50 remaining, but the goal was called back for goaltender interference.

UMass finished the contest with a 27-17 shot advantage and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Wildcats were 2-for-5 with the man advantage. The Minutemen won 37 of 71 (52.1%) faceoffs on the night, led by a 10-for-15 (66.7%) effort from redshirt senior Niko Rufo.

Ryan Wischow made 14 saves in net for UMass and Danny Tirone turned aside 26 for UNH.

The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 6, when the squad will play host to Merrimack at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
