UMASS MEN'S BASKETBALL - GEORGIA PREVIEW
• Following an eight day break between games for the Christmas holiday, the UMass basketball team returns to action on Sunday night with a trip to Georgia in the second-game of the home-and-home series.
• The game will be televised on the SEC Network with Richard Cross (play-by-play) and Mark Wise (analyst) calling the action. It will also be streamed live digitally through WatchESPN and ESPN+ (subscription) which are available mobile, desktop and OTT devices such as Apple TV and Roku.
• On the radio airwaves, the game will be broadcast on the UMass Sports Network anchored by flagship station 105.5 FM WEEI and online via the TuneIn App. New Voice of the Minutemen Jay Burnham will be joined courtside by former player Tim Collins.
• The contest marks the second meeting between the two teams as part of a home-and-home series that was also packaged with this year's UMass football game at Georgia. Last season, the Minutemen won the first meeting held in Amherst, 72-62, behind double-figure scoring efforts from five players. Luwane Pipkins led the way with 17 points and six assists followed by 15 points from Carl Pierre who hit five three pointers. Rashaan Holloway added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. UMass led 43-24 at halftime thanks to a 16-to-2 run to start the game in the wire-to-wire win.Â
• UMass is led again this season by Luwane Pipkins who is the top returning scorer in the Atlantic 10 after notching 21.2 points per game last year. He was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team after a breakout sophomore campaign. He is one of just six players in program history to average over 21 points a game in a single-season joining the likes of Julius Erving and Marcus Camby. He also became the 51st player in program history to eclipse 1,000 points for his career.
• With 1,252 career points, Pipkins now ranks 22nd on the all-time scoring list at UMass after moving past Donte Clark (23rd, 2014-17, 1,238 pts) with a 20-point night against Fairleigh Dickinson. If Pipkins maintains his current scoring average, he could finish among UMass' top-10 all-time scorers as a junior. He currently Doug Grutchfield (21st, 1958-61, 1,257 pts) and Terrell Vinson (20th, 2009-13, 1,276 pts). The Chicago native needs 25 points to crack the all-time top-20 scorers in program history.
• Through 12 games played, UMass has the best scoring average (79.8 pts) in the Atlantic 10 and ranks third in field goal percentage (47.8). Defensively, UMass ranks 13th in the league giving up 74.6 points per night.
• Individually, Holloway leads the A-10 for field goal percentage (72.6) while ranking 11th in rebounds per game (6.1). Pipkins leads the league in assists per game (6.2) and ranks second among all league leaders in points per game (19.8). Laurent is the top three-point shooter in the A-10 hitting 53.1 percent of his shots, while Pierre ranks 12th (40.6 percent).
• On the season, four Minutemen are averaging double figures led by Pipkins' 19.8 points per night. Jonathan Laurent ranks second with an 12.1 point per game average, while Curtis Cobb is third (10.7 points). Carl Pierre rounds out the top scorers with a 10.7 point average, while Holloway is just shy of the mark averaging 9.8 points per night.
• UMass added some more depth to its front court during the Holy Cross game as Randall West suited up. The quarterback for the UMass football team is officially full-time for the basketball team with the conclusion of the gridiron season. On top of the addition of West, the Minutemen have also added Vanderbilt graduate transfer Djery Baptiste starting Dec. 22 with his first game eligibility set for the Georgia contest. Baptise is immediately eligible to play upon his arrival and the 6-foot-10 center will have three semesters with the Minutemen.
