ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia used a hot start to Saturday night's game jumping out to an early 12-to-2 lead as the Bulldogs handed the UMass basketball team a 91-72 loss in the Minutemen's non-conference finale at Stegeman Coliseum.
The loss drops UMass to 7-6 overall heading into Atlantic 10 play which begins next Saturday, Jan. 5 against La Salle in the Mullins Center. The win was the third straight and fifth out of the last six games for Georgia (8-4).
Luwane Pipkins led UMass in the scoring column with 22 points as one of four Minutemen to reach double figures. Jonathan Laurent scored 11 points while adding seven rebounds. Rashaan Holloway and Curtis Cobb each scored 10 points. Djery Baptiste made his debut for UMass hauling down five rebounds and blocking a shot to go with two points in 13 minutes of play.

Samba Diallo scored back-to-back lay-ups followed by a drive from Pipkins and a jumper from Holloway. The Bulldogs briefly stemmed the tide before Diallo scored his third field goal in the run at the 6:56 mark making the score 25-20.
Two straight scores by Georgia stretched the lead back to nine, but UMass again pushed back as a pair of Pipkins free throws followed by a Cobb jumper bround the lead back to five, 32-27, with 3:11 left in the opening stanza.
That was as close as the Minutemen could get as Georgia pushed the lead back to double-figures at the intermission taking a 43-32 lead into the break.
