George and Leidel Power Minutewomen Over BU, 66-55

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Hailey Leidel paced the Minutewomen with 21 points and six rebounds as University of Massachusetts women's basketball picked up a 66-55 win over Boston University on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. In playing 38 minutes, Leidel committed only one turnover and added four assists, three steals and a block.

UMass is 7-4 following the midweek triumph, while the Terriers fall to an even 4-4 on the season.

Senior and fellow co-captain Jessica George finished with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-14 from the field, sparking the Minutewomen out of the gate with a 14-point first quarter showing.

Junior Vashnie Perry came off the bench for 22 minutes of action, contributing seven points as well as career-highs of five dimes and three steals. In addition, Perry tied a single-game best with four rebounds on the night.

The sides exchanged buckets as the game began, but George caught fire from downtown following the first quarter media timeout. After knocking down her first trey from the left wing, Perry intercepted an errant pass on the next BU possession and connected with George in the right corner for another quick triple. She would knock down two additional three-pointers in the frame, the first of which culminated George's own 9-2 run.

BU managed to keep the second quarter neck-and-neck, ultimately sending the teams into halftime with a 36-30 score in favor of Massachusetts.

Leidel heated up out of the break with 14 of her 21 points coming after intermission. An 11-0 run to begin the third stanza helped the Minutewomen begin to pull away as the squad stretched its advantage to as much as 21. As the game hit the home stretch BU refused to go down without a fight, holding UMass without a bucket in the final three minutes before the final horn gave the Maroon and White the victory.

BU had three double-figure scorers on the night including Naiyah Thompson (15), Lauren Spearman (14) and Chiara Tibbitt (14). Thompson also had six rebounds and four assists to guide the Terriers.

The team edge in rebounds went to UMass, 30-23, a figure that was also helped by freshman Jessica Nelson's career-high five boards.

Massachusetts continues the final stages of its non-conference schedule on Sun., Dec. 16 with a 2 p.m. game at Siena in Loudonville, New York.
