Siena Outlasts Minutewomen, 64-59
December 16, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Valiant second half Massachusetts comeback comes up just short
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball eliminated a 14-point second quarter deficit, but the slow start proved costly for the Minutewomen as Siena took a 64-59 win on Sunday at the Alumni Recreation Center.
In her return to the starting lineup, freshman Asia McCoy led the Minutewomen (7-5) with 15 points, narrowly missing her second career double-double with eight rebounds. Junior Hailey Leidel contributed 11 points and senior Jessica George rounded out UMass' double-figure efforts with 10 points. Leidel and sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey added three assists while George landed three steals in the setback.
UMass was plagued in part by foul trouble as the game wore on as both Hampton-Bey and Leidel headed into halftime with three apiece, while McCoy fouled out late in the contest.
Siena took a 36-25 lead into the locker room at halftime, capping a difficult shooting stretch for the Minutewomen. But the visiting squad responded out of the break with a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to 38-32 before continuing to chip away.
Leidel sank a pair of free throws to tie the score at 56-apiece with 1:46 to go in regulation. After both sides returned to the charity stripe, Siena claimed a one-point lead at 58-57. On the Saints' next possession Leidel scooped up a critical rebound before a UMass timeout advanced the ball. But a traveling call awarded the ball back to Siena, forcing the Minutewomen to foul and sending Siena back to the line.
For Siena (4-6), Maddie Sims had a double-double (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Aaliyah Jones came off the bench to finish with 15 points, including going 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
Massachusetts returns to the home hardwood on Fri., Dec. 21 for a 1 p.m. game against UMass Lowell at the Mullins Center.
