Fourth Straight Appearance
The Minutemen earned their fourth consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament to mark the first time that the feat has been accomplished by a UMass squad since 1999-2002. UMass enters the tournament quarterfinals as defending championships after becoming the first team to win both the regular-season outright and the tournament crown in the same season in the A-10 since Rutgers did it in 1991.
Familiar Foes
UMass and VCU will meet up in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the third time in as many years when they kickoff the quarterfinals on Sunday. In their last tournament meeting, the Minutemen scored a pair of goals down the stretch in the second half to defeat the Rams 3-1 and claim their first Atlantic 10 Tournament title since 2007 as returnee Davis Smith scored the wouldbe game-winner while Konrad Gorich added an assist after scoring the game-winner in the semifinals vs. Fordham. In 2016, VCU picked up a 2-1 win in OT on a neutral playing field in Davidson, N.C.
Tournament Tiebreak
The Minutemen took care of business in the final game of the regular season with a 3-1 road win at George Washington but needed help to secure a potential tiebreak that would allow UMass into the tournament as the No. 8-seed. After a late goal was overturned in a 3-3 double-overtime draw between Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis, UMass moved into a three-way tie with St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's for eighth-place with nine points each. After multiple tiebreak scenarios, the Minutemen moved on over Saint Joseph's due to a win over the highest team in the A-10 league table, which ended up being a 2-0 win over #3-seed George Mason.
