Frisk, Doster Carry Women's Soccer Past Dayton, 2-0

October 21, 2018 | Women's Soccer

Minutewomen close out regular season with first win at Dayton since 1998.

DAYTON, Ohio - Second half goals by Rebeca Frisk and Erin Doster boosted the UMass women's soccer team to its first win at Dayton since 1998 as the Minutewomen earned a 2-0 win over the Flyers on Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field.

The victory improved the Maroon and White to 11-5-1 overall this season and 6-3-1 in Atlantic 10 play - the most league wins since 2011. Overall, the 11 victories for UMass are the most since the 2006 campaign.

The Flyers (8-8-2, 4-5-1 A-10) had one of the top chances of the first half when Tiana Bucknor took a free kick in the 36th minute following a foul. Her hard strike glanced off the crossbar as the teams finished the opening stanza scoreless.

The second half started with UMass getting a pair of quality chances from Lauren Bonavita and Jenny Hipp in the first seven minutes after the intermission. The defense then turned away three consecutive Dayton corner kicks.

The Minutewomen finally opened the scoring in the 68th minute when Frisk and Hipp used some tic-tac-toe passing inside the 18-yard box. As UMass carried possession from its defensive third, Hipp and Frisk played a combo game outside the 18-yard box that led to Frisk driving down towards the near post. The junior sent a shot from the 6-yard box to the far post on a tough angle that was able to tuck inside for the goal.

The play energized the Minutewomen who continued to pressure the Flyers defense. In the 83rd minute, that led to an insurance goal from Erin Doster for her fifth of the season. Doster was able to handle a pass from Frisk outside the 18-yard box. After controlling the ball and eluding a defender, Doster took two dribbles before hitting a heavy strike from 17 yards out that glanced off the bottom of the crossbar for the score.

From there, UMass was able to hold Dayton to one corner kick and two shots in the balance of play. Keeper Peyton Ryan made her third save of the day in the 90th minute to preserve the clean sheet.

Dayton keeper Kaelyn Johns made six saves in the loss.

Overall, UMass held a 16-to-9 shot advantage, while the Flyers held a 7-to-3 edge in corner kicks. Dayton was also whistled for offsides four times.
