UMass Defeats Rhode Island To Open Up A-10 Schedule, 155-119

UMass won nine events while sweeping the top-three spots in four different events.

KINGSTON, R.I. University of Massachusetts women's swimming and diving team opened up Atlantic 10 competition with a 155-119 win over Rhode Island on Tuesday afternoon at the Tootell Aquatics Center. The Minutewomen picked up nine first place finishes to go along with 10 runner-up performances.
 
UMass swept the top-three spots in four different events against the Rams, beginning with the 200 Free as Kelly Malyszka posted a top swim of 1:56.09 to take first while Paige Mitchell came in second and Sydnee Aubin rounded out the top three to pick up 16 points for the Minutewomen.
 
Ansley Baker led the way for the Minutewomen in the 100 Free with the top time of 52.38 to take first place followed by Mariam Labib in second with a swim of 53.82 and Hayley Masi in third with a time of 54.43. Labib and Masi took the top two spots in the 50 Free earlier in competition with Labib coming in first with a time of 24.56 followed by Masi in second.
 
Baker opened up her individual races for the day with the 100 Breaststroke as the junior finished in the top spot with a time of 1:07.55 followed by teammate Sami Schieffelin in second-place.
 
Meghan Gray, Maddie Biron and Steph Campo picked up 25 points for the Minutewomen in the backstroke events as the trio swept the top-three spots to pick up 16 points in the 200 Back led by Gray's time of 2:11.29 followed right behind by Biron and Campo. Biron recorded a time of 1:00.17 in the 100 Back earlier in the day to pace the Minutewomen in the event with a second-place finish while Gray and Campo came in third and fourth respectively.
 
Stephanie Judge added another event win for the Mintuewomen, this in the 200 Fly with a top time of 2:10.80 to help UMass pick up 14 points in the event. Olga Egkorova followed in second with a swim of 2:13.06 while Jen Robeson came in fifth to add another point for UMass. Egkorova went on to win the 500 Free with a time of 5:11.62 to pick up another nine points before Judge posted a runner-up swim of 59.44 in the 100 Fly followed by Rachel Grant in third with a time of 59.51.
 
The Minutewomen took the top spots in each of the dives on the day as Emma Roush scored 292.72 points on her way to winning the 1-Meter Dive followed by Maja Boric with a score 258.00 and Katie Polk's score of 222.30 as UMass picked up 16 of 19 total points in the event. Boric went on to win the 3-Meter Dive to wrap up the day with the top score of 287.10 while Polk finished as the runner-up.
 
UMass will remain in action this weekend when they head to Hanover, N.H. for the Dartmouth Invitational. All-day competition is scheduled to begin on Friday, Jan. 19 and wrap up on Saturday, Jan. 20.
