Hockey Outlasts Vermont, 6-3
January 13, 2018 | Hockey
The Minutemen scored a program-record three shorthanded goals against the Catamounts.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Massachusetts hockey netted a program single-game record three shorthanded goals to help lift the squad to a 6-3 win over Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday night. The victory moves the Minutemen to 10-9-1 on the season, 4-5-1 in Hockey East play, while the Catamounts drop to 4-14-4 overall and 1-8-3 in league action.
"It was a great weekend for our guys," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "To win tonight, our first road victory in the league, showed signs of growth of a young team maturing and learning how to win on the road, which is kind of the next step for us. Huge night from Niko Hildenbrand, huge night for Jake Gaudet and three shorthanded goals is a nice milestone for this group."
Gaudet put the Minutemen on the board first, scoring the squad's first shorthanded goal of the season 11:19 into the contest. Freshman Cale Makar received the puck from Mario Ferraro and chipped it up the boards and out of the defensive zone to send Gaudet off to the races. Gaudet drove to the net and fired a shot that tucked inside the far post for his fourth of the season.
UMass converted once more on the same UVM power play just 57 seconds later. Ferraro played the puck off the wall, setting up a 2-on-1 for the Minutemen. Hildenbrand kept it himself and wristed one into the top left corner past Stefanos Lekkas at 12:16, extending his point scoring streak to a career-high four games. Redshirt sophomore Josh Couturier earned an assist on the play, as well.
After using its timeout, Vermont regrouped and ultimately scored on the same power play after allowing the two short-handed goals, cutting its deficit to 2-1. Rob Darrar crashed the net and knocked the puck home from Matt O'Donnell and Jarrid Privitera at the 12:28 mark.
The teams played a scoreless second period before exploding for a combined six goals in the third.
Hildenbrand picked up his second of the night 3:55 into the third period for his first career multi-goal game, tapping in a behind the net feed from freshman John Leonard and sophomore Jake McLaughlin to put the Minutemen up by two, 3-1.
However, the Catamounts responded by closing the gap back to one at the 5:38 mark when Christian Evers' shot from the right point found its way through traffic and under sophomore Ryan Wischow.
UVM then tied the score at 3-3, 8:42 into the period as Trey Phillips cleaned up a rebound off a Conor O'Neil shot when Wischow was without his stick.
UMass regained the lead with less than five minutes to play in regulation as sophomore Jack Suter redirected in a Brett Boeing shot for his third of the season at 15:46.
Makar sealed the victory for the Minutemen with an empty net goal on a Vermont power play after Austin Plevy was whistled for hooking with 2:19 remaining in the third. The tally, which came at 18:27, was UMass' third shorthanded goal of the night.
Plevy added the Minutemen's sixth and final goal with the net empty at 19:55.
Five UMass players had mutli-point nights, led by Ferraro's first three-point game of his career (3a). In addition to Hildenbrand's two-goal effort, Couturier and Boeing had two helpers apiece and Makar logged a goal and an assist.
The Minutemen out-shot UVM 38-34 and were 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Catamounts were 1-for-5. UMass won 36-of-66 faceoffs on the evening (54.5%) with Gaudet going 11-for-17 (64.7%) over the dots.
Wischow totaled 31 saves in net for the Minutemen, while Lekkas had 32 stops for UVM.
UMass returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 16, when the squad will conclude its stretch of seven straight on the road with a Hockey East matchup at Maine at 7 p.m.
