Hockey Edged By Maine, 3-1

January 16, 2018 | Hockey

Hildenbrand extended his point streak to five games with an assist for the Minutemen in the setback.

ORONO, Maine – University of Massachusetts hockey out-shot Maine, 35-20 and controlled much of the possession throughout the contest, but the Black Bears proved more opportunistic, defeating the Minutemen 3-1 on Tuesday night at Alfond Arena. The loss leaves UMass at 10-10-1 on the season, 4-6-1 in Hockey East play, while Maine improves to 12-9-2 overall and 6-6-1 in league action.

"For a road game against a team that's been playing well I thought our guys were outstanding tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we controlled the game for 60 minutes and their goaltender was outstanding. He made tremendous saves throughout the game and Maine was very opportunistic. I don't know the scoring chances, but they were lopsided in our favor. The area that we need to improve upon is getting hungrier around the net. That's where we need to mature as a team and that was the difference in the game. We needed to make life tougher on a very good goaltender in Jeremy Swayman and we weren't able to do it well enough. He was outstanding. He was obviously the difference maker in the game. The chances and the shots were very lopsided, but very proud of our effort. I thought we were outstanding tonight, just one of those games where the goaltender steals the game on you."

After a scoreless opening period, which saw the Minutemen post a 12-4 advantage in shots, the Black Bears got on the board 2:35 into the second. Canon Pieper knocked the puck home amidst a scramble at the UMass net front with Nolan Vesey and Brady Keeper picking up the assists.

Maine made it a 2-0 margin at 6:17 when Chase Pearson found Peter Housakos streaking towards the net unmarked and he fired a shot past Minuteman netminder Ryan Wischow.

The Black Bears added one more before the close of the period. Pearson and Brendan Robbins fed Emil Westerlund from the corner and he tapped the puck in from the top of the crease 15:53 into the second.

UMass broke up the shutout bid late with the extra skater on as freshman Jake Gaudet trailed sophomore Niko Hildenbrand and cleaned up the rebound for his fifth of the season at 19:25 of the third. Freshman Cale Makar logged an assist on the play, as well, for his fourth point in the past three games. Hildenbrand's helper pushed his point streak to five straight games.

The Minutemen were 0-for-6 on the power play in the contest, while Maine was 0-for-4. Wischow totaled 17 saves for UMass and Jeremy Swayman stopped 34 shots for the Black Bears.

UMass will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 19, when the squad returns home to the Mullins Center to play host to No. 8/9 Northeastern at 7 p.m.
