Hockey Battles To 2-2 Tie At Vermont

January 12, 2018 | Hockey

Makar and Leonard provided the tallies for the Minutemen on Friday night.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman defenseman Cale Makar scored his second goal of the season in his return to collegiate action as University of Massachusetts hockey battled to a 2-2 tie at Vermont on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. After the Catamounts (4-13-4, 1-7-3 HEA) netted the equalizer early in the third period, the Minutemen (9-9-1, 3-5-1 HEA) regained the lead with 4:38 to play, only to be answered by UVM 23 seconds later.

"We played a very desperate Vermont team that played very hard and I'm very impressed with the way they played," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "They had a lot of puck possession, which made it feel like momentum on their part. Our guys bared down and played well defensively, created a lot of good scoring chances and Matt Murray, I thought, did a good job. The score is probably indicative of the game, a good hard-fought college hockey game that ended in a tie."

Makar opened the scoring at the 3:16 mark of the first period, firing home a shot from the high slot after receiving the puck from his defensive partner Mario Ferraro. Freshman John Leonard, who fed the point from out of the corner, collected an assist on the play, as well.

UMass held on to its 1-0 lead until 3:14 into the third period when UVM's Derek Lodermeier forced a turnover and skated in alone on Murray to tie the score at 1-1.

With less than five minutes to go in regulation, the Minutemen climbed back on top, 2-1. Niko Hildenbrand won a battle along the wall in the UMass defensive zone, feeding Leonard who skated the length of the ice to flip the puck past Stefanos Lekkas and into the top left corner of the net at 15:22.

However, the Catamounts responded 15:45 into the period when Matt O'Donnell cleaned up a loose puck at the top of the crease and tucked it behind Murray. Conor O'Neil and Lodermier collected assists on the play.

Both teams had opportunities in the extra frame, but neither could convert. Vermont finished the night with a 33-29 edge in shots and went 0-for-5 on the power play, while UMass was 1-for-3.

The Minutemen and the Catamounts will close out the weekend series tomorrow, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. in Gutterson Fieldhouse.
